What is slow fashion?
Slow fashion focuses on quality, sustainability, and timeless style over fleeting trends. It emphasizes thoughtful production processes and ethical labor practices.
Understanding Fast Fashion
What is fast fashion?
Fast fashion refers to cheaply made, trendy clothing produced quickly to meet high demand. It often involves poor-quality materials, low wages, and significant environmental damage.
Am I a bad person if I buy fast fashion?
No! It’s about making small, conscious choices when you can. If fast fashion is your current option, consider buying less, choosing pieces you’ll wear often, or mixing in sustainable alternatives when possible.
How can I shift away from fast fashion?
Invest in high-quality, sustainable pieces that you love and will wear repeatedly. Supporting indie brands like Riverspell, which prioritize sustainability and ethics, is a great step.
Becoming More Sustainable
How can I make my wardrobe more sustainable?
Look for long lasting, versatile pieces made from sustainable materials like deadstock fabric or recycled materials. Shopping secondhand, participating in clothing swaps, and supporting ethical brands are also great ways to build a more sustainable wardrobe.
What should I look for in sustainable fashion?
Look for brands that are open about their materials and production methods. Certifications like GOTS, OEKO-TEX, and Fair Trade are great indicators of sustainable and ethical practices. However, keep in mind that these certifications can be costly and challenging for smaller, independent brands to obtain, so transparency and commitment to sustainability are equally important.
Can fashion still be stylish and sustainable?
Absolutely! Sustainable fashion can be bold, unique, and stylish. Many independent designers are creating innovative, trendy pieces using eco-friendly materials and luxury deadstock fabric, so you can look great while supporting responsible practices.
The Impact of Fashion on the Planet
How does fast fashion affect the environment?
The fashion industry is one of the largest polluters globally, contributing to water pollution, excessive waste, and carbon emissions. Fast fashion’s reliance on cheap materials and overproduction makes the problem worse.
What are deadstock fabrics?
Deadstock fabrics are leftover or unused textiles from previous collections or production runs. Using them helps reduce waste and gives high-quality materials a new life in your wardrobe, turning would-be waste into one-of-a-kind pieces.
What other sustainable materials are there?
Sustainable materials include organic cotton, Tencel, hemp, and recycled fabrics like polyester made from plastic bottles. These options use fewer resources, avoid harmful chemicals, and reduce environmental impact.
How can we make a difference together?
Small changes add up! Supporting brands that prioritize sustainability, buying less but better, and choosing eco-friendly options can collectively reduce fashion’s footprint. By raising awareness and making conscious choices, we can drive the industry toward more ethical and sustainable practices.
Supporting Independent Brands
Who Are Your Designers?
Riverspell collaborates with independent designers who create unique, luxurious, bold collections using sustainable materials like deadstock and recycled fabrics. They prioritize ethical production and innovative design. Currently our partners include Philine of San Francisco, Miracle Eye, and Swaay.
Why support independent brands?
Independent brands often lead the way in sustainability and ethical practices, producing on a smaller scale with more attention to quality. Supporting them helps promote diversity, innovation, and responsible fashion.
How Are Your Designers Sustainable?
Our designers use sustainable materials, avoid toxic chemicals, and implement thoughtful production processes. By choosing deadstock fabrics and other eco-friendly options, they create high-quality pieces that minimize environmental impact.
